Companies like Zappos, The Container Store, and Google consistently make the list of top companies to work for, and many look to them as an enviable model of what their own organizations should be like. Of course, if the culture could be distilled down to simple and tangible elements like pay and benefits, then we would all be on the list with them, but it seems to be an infuriatingly complex set of intangibles that companies are willing to spend thousands of hours and dollars trying to discover.
